I was all set to have a full, productive day at home. (^ ^)
You know, do some work, some blogging... that kind of thing.
Evidently it was not meant to be.

As I've mentioned in previous posts, my friend Moa came over for a visit for Golden Week and the week following that. We did SO much during that time that it simply cannot be condensed into one post. However, here is a very brief and not entirely representative summary of how one may spend 2 weeks in Tokyo. Enjoy!

Oh, Lord! Ekelund!

It was a rainy Monday afternoon when I decided to brave the fierce, tempestuous weather gods and walk down from Aoyama to Shibuya, on a mini-exploration expedition. (Read: I wanted more pics for Tokyo Walking and I had some free time on my hands...and wanted to check out Shibuya station for... Other Reasons Which May or May Not Be Revealed Later.)

And now that I've built up this whole post enough, I can continue. I was walking along and saw what looked like an interesting shop/building, so I stopped to take a photo. Then... I noticed something strange.

A Swedish flag! And not only that... EKELUND was written there too! Oh, and the Moomin in the window also drew my attention. I *had* to go in. It was my duty as a Swede. But what I was met with, I wasn't prepared for.

Mocha Coffee

Coffee is pretty popular in Japan. Good coffee though? Not so much.
There's a Starbucks everywhere you turn here in Tokyo. To be honest, although I was happy about this at first, now I get a bit annoyed when I run into them. They really are *everywhere*. Kinda like cockroaches, you know?
Not that I want to really put any pain on Starbucks, but...well, it just isn't *real* coffee. And we Scandinavians are really, really, really, really (time infinity) particular about our coffee. So when I met up with Fredrik from Agepoyo in Daikanyama, I got kind of excited when we found this:

And so we went inside. ^-^
The short version of this story is that I had the best cup of coffee I've had since I came to Japan. The longer version? Keep reading.

Golden Baka

This post is a part of the Show Me Japan project over at Budget Trouble

During Moa's visit to Japan, I thought it would be a good idea for her to discover what visual kei is really about. So why I took her to a Golden Bomber concert first, I don't know. These guys are a-typical in every possible way. Prepare yourselves for a long post, a tiny bit of fangirling, and a part 2 to come soon after. ^^)b

Tokyo Walking 3

Well, my posting has been a bit erratic of late (although I'm proud to say I've tried to make the most of the scheduled posting function so it's not been too bad), but here comes Tokyo Walking number 3!
I've been doing a lot of walking over the last couple of weeks, most often accompanied by the lovely Moa who has been visiting, but more on that later.

This week's Tokyo Walking is mainly shots from Aoyama. For some reason I was really into "shapes" that day.Nothing overtly pretty, just what I thought was interesting.
Photos are taken on May 1st, 2011.

Pancake Days

Happy Face!

The other day I blogged about going to Nakameguro Lounge. Well, being the greedy thing that I am, it wasn't enough. My friend Tomo and I first went to Yoyogi Park for some disappointing hanami in the dark and then some awesome pancake goodness at Pancake Days in Harajuku.

Well, you can see it but...

Oops, backwards

Tokyo Walking 2

This is the second installment of Tokyo Walking.

Didn't see the last one? You can find the first one here.

This week's shots are from Meguro River, on the 24th of April, 2011.

Although already late April, there were still plenty of cherry blossoms in bloom. These are of a different type from my first hanami at Meguro River.

Love Japan (Graphics)

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post, just an intro to a brand and some very cool dudes behind it that I feel deserve some attention ^^

This post is a part of the Show Me Japan project over at Budget Trouble

The other day, I came across this signpost:

Thought that dog was real at first.
I didn't stop by then, but got curious and went by some days later to find out more.

What I found was JINGO. Now some of you may know the term, either because you're really posh or because you bothered to look it up when reading Terry Pratchett's book of the same title. For those of you who don't, I'll save you a Google search:

jin·go
noun /ˈjiNGgō/
jingoes, plural
1. A vociferous supporter of policy favoring war, esp. in the name of patriotism
2. A person who boasts of his patriotism and favors an aggressive, threatening, warlike foreign policy; chauvinist.

Don't start lining up for your pitchforks and torches quite yet though (or is that only for ogres only?), because that's not what this is all about. The designer gives two reasons for his choice of the name. One is simply that "patriotism" or "love for your country" doesn't have to mean extremist right-wing stance that many people will automatically associate with the word. Especially here in Japan where it can still be a bit of a sensitive subject for many Japanese. In that regard it's similar to Sweden - if you're openly patriotic outside of the sports area, then you obviously must be a neo-nazi. But I digress! Point is, there's positive patriotism and loving your country doesn't exclude loving others as well.
Reason number two is, to summarise, that life is hard and a bit of a battle; don't lose sight of who you are in the midst of it all.

As for the logo design, the three stars that appear under the brand name JINGO stand for things that are important in life: "LOVE", "COURAGE" and "HOPE".

The prints are based on traditional motifs and images but with a modern angle, focusing on the theme of "Japan in the world".

There are kanji for the word jingo: 神護 (they're read the same, "jin" and "go"), meaning "deity/God" and "protection", expressing a personal wish for divine protection..

And all of the above is information I've gathered through talking with the staff and designer, reading up on the website and also watching this short video (the last 5-10 minutes feature an interview with JINGO's designer, Hamada-san. There's English subtitles, so well worth checking out!).
But the truth is, although my initial interest was in the print design (because let's face it, they're all really, really cool. My current favourite is this one.) t-shirts (and hoodies and more), the more I talked with both designer and staff member JIMI, the more impressed and inspired and I became with the ideas and people behind the brand.

So for me, JINGO's three stars stand for awesomeness of: "Concept", "Design", "People".

JINGO's designer, Hamada-san

They very kindly let me take some shots in the shop, which ended up more artsy than informative. I really love the layout of the store and got distracted by that perhaps. ^^;
ごめんね!^^;

Where to find them and said awesome stuff? In Shibuya, online and in the US, at L.A.'s Tokyo A Go Go store.
If you're headed that way, I'm sure they'd appreciate you just dropping by to say 'hi' as well! Or, at least, that's what they've told me and what I've done since and will definitely do again.

Thank you very much to the peeps at JINGO for letting me do a rather spontaneous write-up and I'll definitely drop by again soon!

Sixh.MINT MINTネコ Event

Yesterday there was a special drawing/signing event at the HANGRY ANGRY BATTLES store in Harajuku. Sixh. designer MINT was there to promote his brand MINTNEKO, so if you bought items for over 5250 Yen, you received a free tote bag with an on-the-spot, drawn-by-request kitty from MINT himself. And as you all know, I'm a sucker for the freebies.

I'm also a total sucker for scarves.

I love this scarf! Not just stars, but little cats as well.

Subtle detailing = win チョーよかった、これo(°∀°)b

色は素敵な~ ネコちゃんちょっと怒ってるそうだけど (笑)(ж>▽<)y The colour of this is amazing, my camera doesn't do it justice. Kitty looks a little unhappy though!

The design of the t-shirt/dress I got Tシャツ/ワンピースのデザイン ネコ良しだね~ www ( ´艸`)
Actually this particular item was in store, but as I was talking to MINT someone nabbed the last one behind me! Well, there was one in white, but I definitely wanted the black one. However, before I needed to bewoe my unfortunate circumstances, super store staff came to the rescue and called another shop to see if they still had any left there. They did, and one of the store staff trotted off to go fetch it for me. I really appreciate that and can't express how much it means to me, if only because that sort of thing would NEVER happen in Sweden. EVER. So yaaaaay! (^^)b

Anyway, onto the important stuff: I did my shopping and thus got a tote bag signed and drawn by MINT. Moa did as well, and this is what we got/requested:
Bass kitty is mine, boxing kitty, Moa's.

MMM!
Postcard I shamelessly asked him to sign as well.

And on a compoletely different note, Moa and I got recruited to do a bit of a thing for "ACTION for NIPPON".

They're sending pictures with motivational messages up north to the tsunami/earthquake stricken area in Tohoku. The message underneath says "For the sake of Japan's future and the children of tomorrow".
Various companies, groups and charities are still on the streets collecting money and reminding us that though Tokyo is pretty much back on its feet, other areas that were worse stricken still have a long, long road to recovery ahead of them.
Ganbare~!

ACTION for NIPPON
