Sunday Fun

This post is a part of the Show Me Japan project over at Budget Trouble

じゃない!o(°∀°)b

I actually had a completely different post planned for "Show me Japan" this week, but I had such a great time today, and we played such fun games that I couldn't resist sharing them straight away. That, and "my" Japan involves constant eating, so it seemed more fitting.

I went to a pot luck party! I ate too much, played games (won one, woo), harassed the cuuuuuuute dog of the house and then ate some more. An all round win, basically.

The spread. Alll of it was delicious!

苺の寄付した~ My contribution, in the name of Spring!
Well okay, so it's not a dish, but they did come with cream! And I also brought snacks and drinks. ^^ I've not really been cooking anything lately... If I'd had an oven I would have created awesomeness in a pot, but alas.

So we ate and talked and ate some more, talked some more, ate some more (or was that just me that last time?) and then.....

We played some games!

The Weekly Bulletin

I rather like this title. It makes the post sound more... you know, important and stuff. ^^

Before I get into the usual updates, I'd like to first apologise for being rather inactive of late! Posts I've said were coming up...haven't. Even this weekly doodah is a bit behind schedule. I've had some insane computer issues, that have made everything slower and more laborious than they need to be (and thus made me anti-everything!), plus I've been busy with other stuff on top of that. But more on the "other stuff" next week!

Music/Fashion/Make Up/Art etc, etc, etc

  • This week the staff at musicJAPANplus have been supersuper busy, with live broadcasts of both Girugamesh and SCREW TV (vol 6) shows. If you missed them (they were aired on Thursday and Friday of this week respectively), you still have a chance to out Girgugamesh on Ustream, at least for a limited period! If you want to catch SCREWTV again, you'll need to be a GLOBAL PS COMPANY FAN CLUB member to have a gander. Check out Girugamesh TV below:

  • Still on the topic of SCREWTV, vol 7 will be broadcasted on Friday the 18th of March starting at 9PM JST. MJP also managed to get the #SCREWTV hashtag trending at the top spot in Japan last night! Congrats!
  • Vivat Veritas is doing a dress giveaway this week! The featured item is a stunning blue-gray cut out dress (only one size available) and I've already placed my entry. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Or you can try to win it instead, by leaving a comment on the giveaway announcement post. And just to brown nose a bit, she's a super talented seamstress (she made the giveaway dress herself!) - I admire her a lot, because I know just how much of a pain in the ass sewing clothes from scratch can be, even when you're good at it.
  • Drop Dead Kawaii made me very. very. very happy by posting this make up tutorial by Michelle Phan. It's on how to do the character Nana's make up from the manga/anime of the same name, NANA (by Ai Yawaza). While not a huge anime/manga freak, I lovelovelovelovelovelove NANA! This particular style isn't so extreme and works as a versatile punk/rock style as well, so extra yayness for that.

  • Tokyo Girls' Collection has started releasing videos from the Spring/Summer fashion show. As many bloggers have already noted, "retro girl" is totally in, and I'm particularly impressed with LIZLISA this time around - have a look at those adorable puffy polkadot shorts, for one!!

  • Otherwise, I'm drooling over CocoLulu as always (see more about that below), and thanks to Tokyo Telephone, also Ank Rouge and GR8. (Seriously, these guys are my bible, my dictionary and my shopping saviours!)
  • TokyoFashion have also been posting some really fun fashion/party pics lately, from the Hep Star Opening and also the pre-Valentine's Fashion Fuse 'do. (I'm featuring lot of fashion lately since Spring is on its way and I feel alive again!!)
  • Back onto music, of course my beloved Golden Bomber had their weekly Nico Radio show yesterday and it was a blast. I laughed for at least an hour and a half, and the show's only 1 hr long, so... ^^ I'll be posting up a mini.summary (along with the last two shows' worth...sorry!) soon.

 My News!
  • Well, as mentioned, I've not been posting much and I've not been doing much exciting to tell about either except that I went to see 雅-MIYAVI- live in concert last weekend in Fukuoka! That man never ceases to impress me.
  • We also did some window shopping, and found some funky Buddhas in the process. At the same shop, I fell in love with VIVID VI-VRANT's handmade fake eyelash series!!! This girl is sooo talented! I've never really been into the bottom lashes thing, mainly because when I've tried it looks so unnatural, but these make me want to wear them every day(because they look so unnatural, haha)! They even had some with "Happy" and "Birthday" in the shop, want!!!

Love!!!!!!

  • I also "accidentally" did real some shopping too, because we found a CocoLulu store! My absolute favourite Algonquins had a shop too, but I'd already given in to temptation once... ^^; (Even though they had the cutest Spring trenchcoat I have ever seen!)
CocoLulu letter jacket (needed one for Spring/summer and two rings (attached to the tag - both together for only 500Yen!) and CocoLulu's awesome shopping bags in the background. ^^

  • I'm very into Spring now. Partly because the weather's been spectacular today (warm, sunny and a perfectly temperate breeze!) and partly because Japan's extensive seasonal merchandise is telling me I should be. Starbucks nabbed me, for one. (Actually I've been needing a tumbler/thermos for ages, but I managed to wait it out until the sakura/cherry blossom goods came out... go me!!)

  •  My study materials for the week include: A DVD of aerial views of cherry blossoms in Japan. It's not really study, I just needed more of the Spring vibe. ^^ "The Secret of Japanese diplomas" (I love the "secrets" series and have read a fair few, including the one on coffee, green tea, convenience stores and chocolate". I can't recommend them enough. They're really well presented, easy to read (Since they're aimed at elementary school kids) and there's lots of pictures. The only thing I don't really like is that each volume is usually tied in with/sponsored by one company in particular. Given that the book is published by the PTA, it feels a bit "off" that they openly promote/affiliate with one particular brand of each product. There's a *lot* of self-promo involved...a marketer's dream. Hit the kids young and have their parents encourage it! ;P) and a cute kids' personality quiz book. I'm going to have to do a post series on my results, because they had me in stitches (mostly right on as well!!)
  • Last but not least, still on the Spring vibe... Actually, I've not posted about these flowers yet since I'm a bit behind on my posting, but I thought I just had to prove that I've had these for 2 weeks now, and they're still alive! Hurrah!
Yeah I know, you can barely see cause it's too bright. But this is merely to show they're not dead! A miracle!

Hope you're having a great weekend! How's the weather on your end? ^^

    MYV and Fukuoka

If the title wasn't enough, you realise what this is about now, right?

But before I get to the good stuff, I went window shopping with a fellow concert-going pal. Admittedly we were going to two different concerts, but it's the thought that counts, right? (^ε^)♪

    Rice Polishing Machine!

This post is a part of the Show Me Japan project over at Budget Trouble

Rice Tarou will take care of all your rice polishing needs! For a fee...

Rather cute little buildings are scattered around town here. Should you be fortunate enough to buy/receive rice from a local rice farmer, it may be husked but not polished. Given that you're probably carrying a few kilos of the stuff, you may not be inclined to do it yourself. That's what this machine is for! (^-^)/

But how do you use it? Well, I'll admit I don't know. This is "Show Me Japan" after all, not "explain how everything works in Japan". That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. However, the lovely peeps over at Wandering Vegans have dedicated a whole post (with pictures!) to their own experience using one, so have a look at that if you're curious. ^^

    何で夜中に写真を撮った?
    なんか、人がいる時、ちょっと恥ずかしいよ! ^^;
    誰かは使ったことがあるの?
    教えてね~ ^^

    Oh, and if you're wondering why I took this at night? It just felt weird driving up to one of these, taking a few shots and driving off again while people were cleaning/polishing their rice. ^^;
Has anyone used one of these, or have more info on them?

During my mad search to find more info on the whole rice polishing thing, I came across this video on Japan's Food/Import issue. A bit oversimplified, but I rather like the graphics:

    これもを見つけた、なんか面白いです。 (日本語)

Also still there, they have this cute series of "Just put it on your rice!" meal suggestions. Simple: you have some rice, you put some on it. Some of the suggested toppings are a bit...different. ^^; But I love how the bowl character looks more surprised than I do. Shouldn't he be more worried about the fact that the contents of his head/brain is exposed? Or that it's about to be eaten!?

Oh well, his problem, not mine.
Have a great weekend, everyone! I know I will. (*^▽^)/

    What a Week

    Music/Fashion/Art
    •  Remember the GazettE playing at Tokyo Dome in December last year? Well, now you can relive the experience by reading the live report over at musicJAPANplus, written by yours sincerely. (Also works if you weren't there and want to see what it was like...or even just to read it to give me feedback on it! Please email or leave a comment, I would greatly appreciate it as it's my first article! And believe me, reading it again I'm cringing at certain parts, wanting to adjust them...) There will be another post coming up with more personal comments and thoughts about the concert during the weekend!
    • Which is when I'm off to see 雅-MIYAVI- in Fukuoka! He had a gig in Osaka tonight, which was apparently very, very hot. (He was also featured in OriconBIZ this week regarding his CEOship and artist work (only Japanese though, sorry!)
    • Fellow Swedish blogger Fredrik over at Agepoyo! was featured in Men's Knuckle magazine this past month:
    Top righthand corner!

    Close up!
You can read more about how this came about here and here.

    My Stuff
    • As mentioned, my very best friend here in Miyazaki is leaving for Canada tomorrow, and I wish her all the best! Last night (after my haircut, which I'm still kind of meh about - not tried styling yet though) we did some last-minute purikura and ate some scrumptious takoyaki. Naturally, Choco made an appearance too, even though I forgot him the first time around. Oops. I love how we both totally suck when it comes to trying to choose backgrounds and also decorate the pics later. We're toooo sloooow, haha! There's always at least one picture that goes unfinished/untouched. ^^;

    • I didn't realise it until recently, but apparently I've always wondered what it would be like if a zebra and a unicorn mated, and the offspring was made into shoes. LOVE THEM!
    • I finally, finally was able to join mixi! (=The major social networking site in Japan. Bigger, better and less invasive than Facebook!)
    • I also won a "lottery" to be able to buy pre-release tickets for D=OUT in May, when Moa is here! Woooooooooo!!!
    • On Saturday I went back to Kagoshima *again* - I've got to start showing Miyazaki more love, I know! Will write more about that later, but wanted to show what I bought for the long bus ride up to Fukuoka. Very badly needed... new earphones for my iPod! Gloomy = too cute to resist apparently. ^^;

    • This week's Japanese study material looks a bit like this:
    • And since I've been uncharacteristically down and out the last few hours (I even whinged about it, which is a big fat no-no unless it's to my mom (Sorry, mom!)) butI'm already over it, I bounce back quickly), I'll stop here and finish with some more happiness. Because I do have a lot to be happy about. My mom was back in the States recently and bought me some loveliness from my adored Urban Decay. An eyeshadow primer potion (the Sin one, so it's sparkly!) and their "DE-SLICK Make Up Setting Spray". I'll be needing this come summertime. ^^; (Actually, incidentally, if anyone knows what make up the v-kei bands use, pleasepleaseplease tell me! When I saw ViViD in November last year I saw Re-No (guitar) sweat like the proverbial (=bucketloads...and I mean bucketloads!) and his make up remained not only intact, but it was still complete perfection! o.O To this day, although I think they're great, that is the one most impressive part of their performance that I will remember forever.
The back of the De-Slick box. It made me laugh. ^^

    Bye Bye Tomato!!!

    Shh, don't tell anyone!

Tomo-chan is off to Canada this week, so last week we did a bit of a farewell purikura session. o(^-^)o

And since the purikura machine(s) we picked did the whole Bambi/Disney eye thing, I ended up looking a bit scary.

    Doomsday (°Д°;≡°Д°;)

I woke up this morning to this view:

    今朝はこの感じです~

    Look left...

    Look right...

Look left again.
I would like to add that Shinmoedake was being a nuisance last night - my windows were shaking a bit, and this is the result of said eruption/shaking. As you can see when looking right, the sky's actually a beautiful, clear blue. Clouds = mostly ash.

Everyone else in Japan is getting snow. We're still getting ash.

    WHEE!

Thank goodness I'm off to Kagoshima today.

How's the weather on your end?

    Edit/Correction:

Now an hour later, there's snow!!!! Snow, I tell you!!!!

Last Sunday I took a trip down to Kagoshima to meet a friend for an action packed sightseeing adventure that puts all my travel plans to shame. To say that I was well taken care of would be the understatement of the century. So I'd like to preface my post with a huuuuge thank you to Tomomi and her mother for shuttling me around Kagoshima city and sharing such wonderful things with me. ^-^

We started the day with a lunch at Castle Park Hotel, which has a fantastic view of a rather spectacular garden. The food was amazing as well.

    Une Semaine (One Week) 一週間

    Art/Fashion/Music

It's definitely been a week of new releases!

"For the collection My darling magpie I started with the colors of the magpie and the added strong colors for that instant eye-catching appeal. My darling Magpie is a beautiful woman whos not embarrassed owning her own space and diverting from the norm. Shes headstrong, and only she knows what her next step or infatuation will be, but one thing is for sure: it sparkles."

    My Stuff
    • Lately I've been browsing Drop Dead Cute a fair bit and found "deco curry"; I especially like the rabbit one. There's also a timely (and simple!) Valentine's treat recipe - The Cotton Candy Valentine Cookie Pop (be prepared for a sugary explosion!)
    •  I love me a good freebie - folder I got at the post office the other day! (Doesn't hurt there's a cute guy on it too, hehe)

    •  Incidentally that visit to the post office bank ended up in a big chaotic mess - but that's what I like about Japan. Not the mess (which could have been easily avoided to be honest), but the fact that they wil ldo their utmost to fix the mess made. I went into the office after hours and they sorted the issue promptly, politely and happily (admittedly I know them all there now anyway, so that's not so  difficult). I then also received some presents as an apology for said mess! Whee! As already noted, I'm a total sucker for a freebie, so even though it wasn't necessary it's well appreciated!!! (especially when comparing how it would have been dealt with in Sweden - An irritated "why are you bothering me" sullen glare, accompanied by "Come back on Monday...or preferably never" attitude.) This is what I got:
    Genuine JP bank Saran Wrap!
Two really cute bowls! Hers and His kinda thing? :P

    • This is purely for the benefit of my parents: Look! I eat vegetables, and even mushrooms! (And yay for going to the supermarket just before closing time, cheapcheap! ^^)
      Veggies for nabe! (hotpot)
      • I first found out about this book when it was reviewed on All Japanese All the Time some time ago and thought it seemed like a pretty nifty thing indeed. It's basically a very eay to understand, concise guide on how to write business e-mails in Japanese (written by a Japanese author for Japanese readers, so you know it's going to be accurate at least ^^). It has really good examples and outlines for virtually any business setting, and also gives advice on which set phrases are best used at what times etc. Admittedly I'm not exactly writing tons of business emails, but it's a good 'light' intro to keigo (formal Japanese), and I do run into a lot of the vocabulary just by being a customer, so it's good to have a fair idea what people are on about without being too overwhelmed by the length of the words/sentences they're using.

Does what it says on the tin: Return the email in 1 minute! (or 10, in my case. But that's still better than half an hour!)
      •  I received some unexpected omiyage this week and almost cried because of it - it's so sweet and truly, truly unexpected.

      Hokkaido bear clip magnet

      Hokkaido character hand towel ^^
      • Oh and you know bad things are going down when you start getting surgical masks with your advertising instead of the usual free pocket tissues.^^;

That's all for this week! Tomorrow is a national holiday (Japan National Foundation Day), hurrah! Anyone got big plans for the long weekend? ^-^

      I'm in Love!

      ...with Chopper!

This isn't news to a lot of you, I know.

My friend Tomo gave me a particularly adorable little stuffed toy Chopper that deserves its very own post. He will go with me everywhere from now on! ^-^

(And I guess he'll have to be my Valentine this year (>ω<*)ノノ田♥)

Soooooooo cute!!!!
He shall be my year-round Chopper and we will do year-round things and go to places together all year-round and he'll wear year-round dre-....clothes!

(That was a horrible, horrible parody of the Black Books "Summer Girl" episode that I don't quite remember, but would like to see again now... ^^)

      And I shall name him....
      ....
      ....
I haven't come up with anything actually, part from "Baby Chopper", and that's just lame.
      Any ideas?

      でもこのチョッパーの名前は・・・
      なんでしょうか。
      名前いるよ!
      ベビーチョッパーはちょっと・・・ ^^;

Instead of a bib, he has a cape. Bonus points for awesomeness. Cape = win.

And another one for good luck!
More Chopper posts on the way soon~ (*^^*)

      Nandeyanen Flashback: The Herbivore Boy

As Valentine's Day coming around next week, I thought I'd post an old, but still mostly relevant post about the whole herbivore phenomenon that's still getting a fair amount of press here and there in Japan these days. Why it's relevant to Valentine's? Find out on Monday! I'll also be updating with more info and revising my personal thoughts about them. (^-^)

Note: This post was first published in August 2009 as a script for the Nandeyanen Podcast (a project my friend Vix and I started, which is currently on a semi-permanent hiatus). Some links may not longer be active, and personal opinions may have (read: definitely) changed since it was written.

Do feel free to leave comments/answers or e-mail me regarding your experiences with Herbivore Boys (or if you consider yourself one)!
I'd love to hear from you! ^^

Keep it short and simple - Mount Fuji on the 29th of December 2010, JAL flight number can'trememberitatallanddon'treallycareon the route from Tokyo to Miyazaki city. ^-^

      Ash Week

      HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!!

It's now super duper officially the Year of the Rabbit. Never mind that it's already been such for a month here in Japan.... ^^; To start the year off, here's a picture that I forgot to add in my Show Me Japan post from a couple of weeks ago. One of the guests at the exhibition wrote this:

Wish for the year: To become someone people can rely on. Followed by: I WANT MONEY!! (*≧▽≦)

Okay, so this week's summary will be ash themed. Why? Allow me to do what a lot of fashion blogs do... but without the picture. Use your imagination. You have one, right? So, today's outfit consists of four tops, one sweater, two pairs of leggings, one pair of work pants, a huge scarf, three kairo and I've topped it off with a layer of fine, grey ash. All over. Sounds great, doesn't it?

Here's my latest video on it all. It's more exciting than the previous two, but only barely. You have been warned.

Shinmoedake is still erupting, everything has ash over it, under it, in it, in between it... My car, the local convenience store, my workplace, my hair, my nose. Ararargagragrghghh! Enough already! Thank goodness I'll be spending most of the weekend out of town. Anyway, enough of the whining and on with the show!
