More about the kotatsu

So lately my level of effectiveness at home has rapidly been decreasing. Normally I would attribute this to the change of season - winter isn't really my thing. Or rather it is for about two weeks, then I'm over it. Bring on the snow, then let it go away and not come back again until next year. No snow this time, just cold, wet days and no insulation. o.O Yeah, no insulation. I'm actually pretty cold resistant when it comes to being inside, but that's provided I'm warm when indoors. If it's cold around me all the time, I'd rather hibernate.

It's gotten sooo cold!

But the cosmos seem to be doing fine. ^^

VK TV and more

So! This is an update I meant to write last week but, but, but. Well, the short version is that I didn't do it.

So here goes - VK TV and more, the condensed version:

  • At 9pm Japanese Standard Time, SCREW TV Vol. 3 will be aired over at musicJAPANplus. (At the time of writing, it's on in 3 and a half hours o.O) As usual, the video will appear on the top page, so just watch and enjoy. This time there'll be a special Twitter account for English translations. Follow en_mjp for live interpretation of the band!
  • Next month on December 17th, same place and same time (9pm JST, at musicJAPANplus) it'll be Matenrou Opera's turn to be questioned by fans.
  • As I've mentioned before, 雅 -MIYAVI- will be going on another world tour starting in March 2011. He's announced more destinations (including Strasbourg, France! No fair!) as well as partricipation in a film live in Russia (last week).
  • There's going to be an awesome event with visual kei bands, including ViViD, AYABIE and DaizyStripper (=love ^^*) shown on WOWOW TV tonight, which will hopefully be recorded for me.
  • This past weekend Golden Bomber's drummer Darvish Kenji released an exclusive video of his return to his hometown in Fukuoka prefecture, where he reveals to his family what he's actually been doing the past couple of years. If you understand Japanese, it's hilarous. ^^

That's it for now! Enjoy SCREW TV tonight, I know I will! ^^

Thanksgiving

So it seems Thanksgiving has arrived this year as well. Not only in the States, but the 23rd of this month was Labor Thanksgiving in Japan as well. What this actually means I can't say for sure, but a thanksgiving is a thanksgiving and I'm rolling with that.
While Thanksgiving as a holiday hasn't been a huge thing in our family, it's still a good reminder be actively aware of things we should be grateful for in life. Obviously I could get all deep and serious about this topic, but that's too much trouble, so I'll stick to a random giving of thanks that I was planning to do anyway (because I always forget Thanksgiving even happens until someone politely informs me/asks what I'm doing for it).

A few things I'm thankful for this (and last) week.

I got a random present at work the other day!  Just some wet wipes, but completely unexpected and I'm a sucker for freebies...
On Friday I also got some extra bread and 3 mandarins; the perfect number - we were three people heading off to the concert! ^^

Freebie = Awesomeness 唯=ありがたい!

 *ブログポーストの題名はダウトの曲「DANCE NUMBER」に関してよ~
*The blog title is in reference to one of D=OUT's tracks, "DANCE NUMBER" that was played on the night.

So this is a bit late, and will be split up into two posts since all my memories and impressions will be totally mixed up otherwise.

So on Friday I attended my first visual kei concert in Japan. I've seen both 雅 -MIYAVI- and Abingdon Boys School back in Europe, but I can say with complete confidence this was a completely, completely, COMPLETELY different experience. (o.O)

I've yet to discover if some of the things I noticed were only Japan-based, Visual kei based or Miyazaki prefecture based. I suspect it's a mixture of them all. Safe to say, I learned a lot that night. That for example, a lot of the references/jokes that Golden Bomber make to/about the visual kei genre and its fans aren't always exaggerations.

Regardless, what I noticed the most was:
Applause = nopes.
Random calling out/cheering = Yeah, it's not done.
Headbanding = Definitely yes, but you should keep in sync with everyone else. This sucks for rhythmically challenged individuals like me. ;P
Even during the MC, the comments were from the audience were kept to a minimum. (This is where I usually shine, too. I'm not mean though, just funny. ^^)

But! I tried my best! And it was soooooooooooooooooooooo much fun!

Oh! And also! the fact that most visual kei fans are girls was nothing new to me, but this was: during the headbanging, usually for better or worse (actually almost always for worse...^^;) people's individual odours tend to waft around the room with extra intensity. But! At this show, it was really, really pleasant! Shampoo and perfume mixed with fabric softener. To compare, what you'll usually get is: sweat, tobacco and beer. Mmmm. So that was a really, really pleasant surprise, hurrah! ^^

And I've come this far and I've not even talked about the bands. Who were all awesome. (I've only barely touched on one of the bands playing in the title of this post, oops. ^^;) But! I'm leaving all that for the next post! Rest assured it was a fantastic experience, and I was actually close to going to the next show in Kagoshima the day after too!

(Good thing I didn't though because my neck was kiiiiiiiilling me...)

Snow!

The pic is from webcam coverage of my "home"town. (I use home in quotation marks because it's a long story.) It's so nice to see snow!
I get all nostalgic and look forward to a 'real' winter with a White Christmas... for all of five minutes.
Then I'm over it and quite happy to be watching the scene from underneath my kotatsu. ^^ The truth is, snow is fun! And great! For about two weeks. Then it becomes a pain, a hassle; a seemingly neverending battle against the elements. Will Spring ever truly arrive? Every year I'd have my doubts. No such problem this year, even though we've had a couple of grey and dismal days here on and off. So I'll keep on checking the cam, sipping my tea and wiggling my pleasantly warm toes under my kotatsu.

And good winter to ya! ^^

Bus Ramen!?

This post is part of the Japan Blog Matsuri - November's theme is: Fall is the Season for Eating and is hosted by Surviving in Japan.

Close to where I live there's what looks like an empty lot with two delapidated old buses tucked neatly into the corner. Until recently I thought this eyesore (at least comparatively, since the neighbours are really new, fancy buildings) was closed, so I decided to stop by and take some pictures. Crossing the grounds, I suddenly saw a sign that said: 営業中 (Open for business). O.o!!!! Being the incredibly rational person I am, I quickly hightailed it out of there and decided to do some recon via aquaintances. Turns out, this bus duo tucked into the corner of that lot are a ramen restaurant! It's in full business, and has been for 38 years!! o.O!!!

And that's where the story of the visit to Bus Ramen begins! ^^

So, it's been pretty quiet here this week. My attempt at denying the aforementioned cold went so-so. Been to bed early most every night and haven't really been in the mood to write, even though I've been relatively capable of doing so. Alas and woe. But! From tomorrow onwards, I have tons of updating to do! So, hopefully I'll... do...it... Buuuuut...before that, sleep. (Read: watch an episode of One Piece, then sleep.) And then I have a girly catch up/tea party. ^^ After that, *probably*.

P.S. My neck hurts. Yesterday's concert was awesome, but I think I overdid the headbanging. Ow. Not a fulltime profession for me, it seems. ^^; More on that tomorrow! Maybe!

Was looking through an old copy of SHOXX the other day:

I'm not sure there's going to be any sensible posts put up in the next few days as I'm studying hard for my JLPT and I seem to have caught a bit of a cold. (Although I'm in complete denial of it and am trucking on as usual. ^^)

True Randomness

Comes, well, randomly.

So to honour that, here is a recent picture of the Shibuya skyline, complete with Darth Vader looking down upon the crowds. Why, you ask? Because Darth Vader likes hanging out with his friends (and to do this, he needs a cellphone it seems.)

Let's hope he's sensible enough to bring some doughnuts on his outings, correctly packaged of course.

Although all that sugar will probably make him thirsty, so it would be wise to also bring the new Pepsi Mont Blanc. Yes, you read it right. Pepsi and Mont Blanc in the same sentence. I've seen this at the convenience stores, but I'm too scared to try it. I can only imagine it's even sweeter than the original, and that puts me off. ^^;

Tokyo Sky Tree is nearing completion (and by that I mean it's opening Spring 2012), and recently the tower's character was revealed! (Yes, *everything* has its own character here.) Sorakara-chan! I guess she's cute enough in her own way, but what I really like is that they went all out with the font for her name. It's very colourful and creative. ^^

In other, not so internationally published news, my friend Linda has a new, very spiffy, haircut. I need to get mine cut too... ^^; But, I've already talked about what that'll look like, haven't I? ^^
(I also sent her a letter, which she kindly posted on her blog, so if you want to see my crabby handwriting and awkward doodling, by all means take a peek.)

Well, this post is feeling a bit empty without any pictures, so here's a rock version of the theme tune for 'My Neighbour Totoro'. ^^

Oh, and on the subject of screens and such. 3D TV is, well, I don't know if it's getting big per se, but it's being advertised a lot. And Versailles are producing a 3D version of a concert they held earlier this year. It's being shown at electronics stores all over the country. I'm going to have to check it out! (....if there happens to be a copy shown in my area... ^^;)

But why the eyepatch? Find out here:

Oh, and here's Alice Nine's new release, Stargazer:
ちなみにAlice Nineの新曲「Stargazer]はこれ:

Continuing on the visual kei thread, Kagrra,, a PS Company veteran, announced on November 11th that they're breaking up and ceasing all activities after their Shibuya show on March 3rd, 2011. I really like a lot of their stuff and haven't found any bands with a similar music style (or at least not done as well). They combine the use of traditional Japanese instruments with 'modern' electric guitars, bass etc. Their visual style is also heavily 'wafuu' (Japanese style) influenced, often donning gorgeous kimono in videos and on stage. I'm also really fond of the vocalist's voice, so it's sad to see them go. Then again, I suspect that although they're quitting as Kagrra,, the members will probably still be active in some way musically; so that's something new to look forward to! ^^

(And yes, the extra comma is supposed to be there - it's part of the band name: "Kagrra,")

Still on the J Rock scene, but a little bit belated,  雅 -MIYAVI- announced the birth of his second daughter, JEWELIE a few weeks ago. She was a bit premature, but seems to be healthy and fine, as is her mother.
He also announced another World Tour planned in 2011, with at least one set date in London so far.

And because this post actually ended up less random and more visual kei than planned, I'll stop here and post the proper random stuff later. ^^;

First, buy a kotatsu.

SCREW TV Vol 1, 2 and 3

SCREW have certainly been active in the online livestreaming world of late. The first installment of SCREW TV on the 28th of September turned out to be a huge success, with added extras such as behind-the-scenes photos and a post-broadcast extra interview released shortly thereafter.

SCREW Vol. 2 was aired almost exactly a month later, on the 29th of October. This turned out to be hugely popular as well, but unfortunately I missed it due to other commitments. However, lucky for me (and perhaps you too!), Vol.2 is being re-aired tomorrow, (Monday) the 8th of November at 11am JST. Lucky me, because normally I'd be working. Somehow it managed to coincide with an unexpected day off, hurrah! I'll be parked in front of my computer under my kotatsu with a cup of genmaicha - and so should you! Well, preferably underneath your own kotatsu; mine's taken. ^^

As if that weren't enough, musicJAPANplus has also announced that SCREW TV Vol. 3 will be aired on Monday, November 29th, at 9pm JST. As with the other installments, it will be aired on the musicJAPANplus top page. You can send in your questions and comments via the forum until then, and via mJp's Twitter live on the day as well.

And of course if SCREW ain't your thing, you can always vote for a different artist/band to participate in MJP TV.

Happy watching! ^^

X2 Happy!!! Part 2

So yesterday afternoon, in the midst of doing dishes, laundry and other boring (but definitely in need of doing) stuff, the doorbell rang! (Yes, this is a pretty shocking occurrence. At least it is for me.)

Low and behold, it was a deliveryman! And he had something for *me*! Although I have to admit I was rather amused over him asking, with seemingly great uncertainty, if I was the person his delivery was intended for. I'm sure it was more a matter of pronunciation rather than concern over whether I was the foreigner he was looking for, but it was amusing nonetheless. ^^

Anyway! A package! For me! Completely unexpected! I couldn't believe it!

So in true 'moi' fashion, I ripped it open (with great care) to see what was in it!

This is what I found:

A beautiful hankerchief from Celine, cookies(?) from Gokan and a lovely handwritten letter!

The handkerchief pattern is soooo cute! I know I can't get enough of handbags! ^^

I don't know what I've done to deserve such a wonderful gift, but thank you so much Motoe! I love it! As always I appreciate your lovely letters!

I'm feeling very grateful, humbled and incredibly, incredibly blessed this week. I've had some wonderful conversations, spent time with both new and old friends, had some incredible opportunities open up for me and have received amazing and unexpected gifts! Thank you very much to everyone! I know I'm not always the best at showing or expressing my appreciation, but please know that your kindness doesn't go unnoticed (even with a scatterbrained loon like me ^^).

Thank you!

Well, not so much an assault, but certainly a lightning visit. I drove down (and got stuck in traffic in Kagoshima city; I should have known better and stayed on the highway for longer but...) and on the way I got kind of lost and had to ask for directions at this (fantastic looking!!!) onsen. I think I rather alarmed a couple of the guests though, so apologies for that. I'm definitely going back there for a proper onsen visit one day, it looked fantastic!

Country Gold, Kumamoto

Official Programme
About two weeks ago, I went to a very special event - Kumamoto's (in/near Mt. Aso) Country Gold International Country Music Festival. It was a a great event, but kind of surreal to say the least. Everyone was decked out from head to toe in Western gear (apart from me who went for a more 'rock'style, since that was the only clothing that I had to keep me warm once the sun set) and fully into the whole theme of the festival.
